The CARE Research Collaborative project is managed by Belmont University and is located in Budongo Forest Reserve, Uganda. It focuses on constructing an eco-lodge that operates as a social enterprise to support conservation and biodiversity efforts in the forest reserve. This innovative approach aims to raise funds for conservation work while offering sustainable accommodation options within the reserve. Additionally, the project's objective includes the creation of a chimpanzee corridor to facilitate the movement of these endangered primates within the forest. Great Lakes Safari, the majority shareholder, oversees the lodge's management, ensuring its alignment with conservation goals.
Furthermore, the project leverages an investment fund to support various businesses that contribute to both economic development and environmental sustainability in the local community surrounding the park entrance. Partnerships with organizations like Flybox and East Africa Power demonstrate the project's commitment to creating employment opportunities and fostering positive impacts on the community. Collaboration with institutions such as Uganda Technical College in Kyema highlights a key focus on skills development and training, ensuring local apprentices have access to job opportunities upon completing their education. Additionally, partnerships with the University of Surrey provide technical expertise and data gathering through Earth Observation technology.
Impact Bridges Group is responsible for building the theory of change and providing strategic guidance for the project's IMM system, which allows for data gathering, management, and analysis. Impact Bridges Group is also developing a manual for performing an investment appraisal for similar projects. This includes the feasibility study, financial modelling, risk analysis, and the steps required in the financial and legal structuring of such a deal.
